What's the difference between a rapid screen and a lab-based drug test?

Walk-ins are welcome for individual employees, though scheduling ahead ensures the shortest wait. Employer-directed testing groups should book in advance to coordinate collection timing.

Yes, rapid urine drug screens are read by a trained technician in as little as 15 minutes. Negative results are reported the same day the test is performed. If a result is presumptively positive and requires laboratory confirmation, allow 24–48 hours for the additional analysis.

rapid screen identifies the presence or absence of a drug class using an on-site test kit — results in 15 minutes, no lab required. A lab-based test sends the specimen to an accredited laboratory for a more detailed, legally defensible analysis, typically including a confirmation step. For DOT-regulated testing, a lab-based test is always required. For most non-DOT employer programs, a rapid screen is sufficient for initial screening — with lab confirmation recommended if the result is presumptive positive.
